Lead change in the DTM: victory for Tom Kristensen

Excitement in the battle for the DTM title. In the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Tom Kristensen scored his first win of the season with his Audi A4 DTM. After two victories for Mercedes-Benz in the first two rounds of the season, the Dane showed a dominant performance and took the lead in the drivers’ standings from Bernd Schneider. “Our early second pit stop was a tactical geniality and the key to success”, the winner was delighted with the good work by his team. For Kristensen, it was the second win in the most popular international touring car series. The seven times’ winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours had scored his maiden win at the same venue in 2004. After 161.348 kilometres in the race, Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green finished second and third respectively.

Audi DTM

At the narrow track in the region of Magdeburg, team tactics were mainly decisive about the outcome of the race. After a good start and a successful first pit stop, Kristensen initially pulled clear from his rivals. But then, the Dane lost precious seconds and his margin over main rival Spengler as he got stuck in traffic. The Audi Sport Team Abt decided spontaneously to make the second stop earlier and thus prevented Kristensen from losing more time. Back on the track, he drove on to victory in a dominant way and even managed a hattrick during the weekend: pole-position, victory and the fastest race lap with 1.21.121 minutes.

Audi-driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen crossed the line in fourth place.

Swede Mattias Ekström (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline) who had started ninth finished seventh at Oschersleben behind his team-mate Martin Tomczyk.

In the championship standings, Audi-driver Kristensen is leading with 26 points, just ahead of Mercedes-Benz-duo Bernd Schneider (24) and Bruno Spengler (12). The fourth round of the DTM will be taking the 20 drivers to Brands Hatch in Great Britain on July 2.

Tom Kristensen (winner, Audi Sport Team Abt): “That was a great weekend for Audi, the team and myself. It was my first win in the DTM since Oschersleben 2004. We have broken our duck. It is a great feeling.”

Audi motor sport director Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich:
“I think that personally, I can be very satisfied. Tom Kristensen and the team have shown a great performance. After we had already been very strong in the first two races and our rivals were as strong here as we know them, I can say: “mission completed”. I am also happy that we are now in the lead of the championship. This result makes it a great weekend for us. The race was hard, but fair.”

Golf GTI Edition 30

Wolfsburg, 21 May 2006 – Volkswagen today introduced the Golf GTI Edition 30, a new study to mark the 30th anniversary of the GTI at the Golf Record Day in the Veltins Arena in Schalke, Gelsenkirchen in front of an audience of thousands of Golf drivers from throughout Europe.

  • Performance plus: one horsepower more for each year
  • Equipped to satisfy a profile of special wishes of customers

With a powerful 230 PS (169 kW) 2.0 litre turbo FSI engine, the Edition 30 study is closely related to the production model and responds to the wishes of GTI enthusiasts. The options package, a profile of desired equipment, is a reaction to the numerous wishes from customers.

Especially prominent are the flat black 18-inch alloy wheels, the lower front and rear panels, the side skirts in body finish and the darkened tail lights. A plaque on the right side of the rear hatch with the text “Edition 30” identifies this GTI study.

The interior includes top-quality, part-leather sport seats sporting the distinctive “Interlagos” diamond pattern in the cloth centre section.

The red-stitched leather steering wheel is trimmed with a clip bearing the text “GTI” on a red background. Another eye-catcher is the foil with the text “Edition 30” on the door sill. A special highlight is the gear stick knob in the form of a golf ball. Floor mats trimmed in red round out the dynamic character of the study.

Audi “Streets of Tomorrow”

We had a blast yesterday at the Streets of Tomorrow. Even though we had a little mix up signing in, it was a lot of fun with the little ones and wife. My son was in heaven, as was I. Instead of seeing race cars on TV, he got to sit in an Audi LMP1 R8. He was way shy at first but not towards people but I think in awe that a race car was right before him.

Audi

The mix up came when we were walking up and had some workers say we could take them (my daughter too) in the Q7 test drives. Well, online it says 4yrs old or older, so we had no intentions of taking them. To make a long (it was) story short, they didn’t let us. I almost got to go by myself but my son wanted to sooo bad and if he couldn’t then I didn’t want to either.

Other than that, the event was awesome. It was also open to the public. You did have to register online but they even say to pass it around, granted a sales thing. I did see a good amount of “other” brands parked around..

On the spot, was a slew of Q7’s. When this design came out I was iffy. I’m a big fan of the new grill etc but for some reason the Q7 caught me off gaurd. It has been growing on me the more I have seen it online. In person it’s a whole new ride with elegant but sporty lines. The grill speaks for itself. Interior is plain and simple Audi perfection. I can say that the included LCD’s in the rear are a bit odd as they are not incorporated into the actual seat/headrest. However, they are removable in the same way a headrest is. I will never own a Q7 so… ;)

After you complete the Q7 test drive, you have the option to take a shuttle over to, Turner Field in our case, test drive the 2006 A3, A4, TT, A6 and A8. On top of that, you can take an insane spin in the 2007 RS4, with a professional driver of course.

The RS4 is nutz. That’s all I can say. We had a small auto-x type loop. From the moment you take off, your head is in the seat. This thing is pushing out 420hp/317tq through its V8 FSI® Direct Injection engine. We had a Phantom Black pearl and a Mugello Blue pearl. I want mine in Imola Yellow or Misano Red please. Unfortunately no white!

Tom Kristensen also wide awake in warm-up

His home track, as Tom Kristensen is jokingly calling the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, seems to suit the Dane: in warm-up on Sunday morning, the pole-sitter for the third season round also set the fastest lap.

Tom Kristensen - DTM Audi

With the Siemens Audi A4, he lapped the 3.667 kilometres long track in 1.21.725 minutes. The second fastest lap on Sunday morning was set by Bernd Schneider with the Vodafone AMG Mercedes C-Class, 0.078 seconds down on Kristensen. The top three was completed by Jamie Green, the second-placed driver from qualifying.

Already in fourth place was the best-placed driver with year-old machinery: with the Easy Rent AMG Mercedes C-Class, Alexandros Margaritis was fourth fastest with a lap time of 1.21.898 minutes. Mattias Ekström, who had bad luck in qualifying and is ninth on the starting grid, ended the 30 minutes’ warm-up session in fifth place ahead of Mika Häkkinen. Timo Scheider, Martin Tomczyk, Pierre Kaffer and Christian Abt completed the top ten. Bruno Spengler was eleventh, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen occupied 15th position.

In dry conditions, Susie Stoddart became the best-placed driver with a car from 2004 in 17th place. With the AutoScout24 AMG Mercedes C-Class, the young lady racer from Scotland outpaced her direct opponents Mathias Lauda (Junge Gebrauchte AMG Mercedes C-Class), Vanina Ickx (Orig. Zubehör Audi A4) and Olivier Tielemans (Futurecom Audi A4). Stoddart was less than two tenths of a second down on Stefan Mücke, who ranked 16th with his 2005-spec TV-Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class.

Even though warm-up is only a final check before the race, the close competition in the field makes us expect a highly exciting third round. Up to Frank Stippler in 13th place, all drivers were within one second. Stippler, born in Cologne and living in Bad Münstereifel, set a lap time of 1.22.560 minutes with his S line Audi A4, 0.835 seconds slower than his fellow Audi-driver Kristensen in front.

Kristensen on pole, just ahead of Green

Heavy wind at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben made DTM qualifying a huge challenge for the 20 drivers. Like last year already, Audi-driver Tom Kristensen secured himself pole-position for tomorrow’s race at 14.00 h (ARD live from 13.45 h). With his Audi A4 DTM, the Dane crossed the 3.667 kilometres long track in the region of Magdeburg in 1.19.264 minutes and thus will be starting from the first position for a DTM race for the third time in his career. For Audi, it was the 30th pole-position in the DTM.

Audi-driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen, will start from fifth position.

Most prominent victim of the new shoot-out qualifying was the 2004 DTM champion. In the second of the three sessions, Mattias Ekström failed to make it among the best eight. He was just 0.021 seconds down on fellow-Audi-driver Frank Stippler.

Tom Kristensen (1st place, Audi Sport Team Abt):
“Pole-position was exactly what I needed. I am really happy. It would have been nice to have a few more Audis standing behind me, as it then would be a little more comfortable for me in tomorrow’s race. In the race on Sunday, we will be stronger over the entire distance than today.”

Audi Motor sport director Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich:
“Of course, I am really happy with Tom Kristensen’s pole. He has been showing a strong performance throughout the weekend and also in previous years at the Oschersleben circuit. I am not so happy with the result of the other three. But that shows that you have to have everything spot-on in qualifying. This type of qualifying is merciless, that was motor sport at its best. For us, standing on the pit wall, this new format is really thrilling and that is getting across to the spectators as well.”
