to street-race in the United Arab Emirates.

The hottest drag strip around is in the Persian desert, a half-hour drive up the gulf coast from Dubai City, where Emirates Motorplex sits atop a pile of sand. On a typical night, spectators can watch a procession of exotics (like Lamborghini Gallardos) and American-built muscle cars - and, when religion calls, take time out to pray in the onsite mosque. The racing club is a pastime of its chair, Sheikh Marwan Bin Rashid al Mualla, whose likeness appears on some drivers’ cars in a show of deep affection and respect for their benefactor. The UAE government kicks in some cash, too. It sees the track as a way to reduce deaths from drag racing on public streets.

Shining like a pin and in brilliant form - this is how an Auto Union Type D vehicle and an Audi A4 DTM car can be marvelled at during the DTM presentation in Düsseldorf on March 26th. Almost like grandfather and grandson the two racing cars will symbolise the victorious tradition of the emblem with the four rings.
When in 1932 Auto Union AG evolved retroactively from Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, a high-calibre racing commitment served to hone the new company’s profile between 1934 and 1939. In Zwickau revolutionary 16-cylinder racing cars were created. They were far ahead of their times: Their mid-engine design with the powerplant located in front of the rear axle did not establish itself firmly in racing until 1960. The consecutive Audi Union model ranges A, B, C and D, some of which delivered more than 500 hp, celebrated a total of 23 Grand Prix victories within thespan of six years. In hillclimb races and record stints the silver racers from Zwickau collected numerous other trophies.
Today, the emblem with the four rings still stands for the development of high technology for successes in racing - Auto Union became Audi, and the duels between the brands from yesterday continue in today’s DTM. The 460-hp Audi A4 DTM, the first version of which made its debut in 2004, has so far clinched eight victories within merely two years in 21 races. Audi subjected the A4 DTM to targeted further development in winter in order to continue this success story in 2006. After all, the idea is to write history again just like in the days of the Auto Union brand.
Through the love of Technorati, I found mark.riders images from the testing days this week at BH.
He has a flickr set that is awesome including this front end of an Audi A4. This gives ya a nice shot of that “top secret” area that manufacturers try to hide..

On Wednesday, the third of the four official DTM test days held at Brands Hatch, Tom Kristensen once again set the fastest lap time, in his Audi A4 DTM. On Tuesday, the Dane had also been the quickest. In his fastest lap of day three, Kristensen crossed the line in 41.688 seconds, with his brand mates Mattias Ekström, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Frank Stippler finishing second, third and fourth respectively. Behind the wheel of his AMG-Mercedes C-Class, two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen took fifth place.
Tom Kristensen (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline): “I completed many long-runs today and we could test a lot of things. Then I went out on a new set of tyres and succeeded in setting the fastest lap time. I’m really looking forward to the race in Brands Hatch as the people here are true motor racing enthusiasts. They love motor racing and certainly will also love DTM. I expect to see a huge crowd of inspired spectators here, in July.”

On Tuesday evening - the evening of the second day of the official DTM tests held at Brands Hatch - the top positions on the time sheets were held by Audi drivers. Tom Kristensen, who had already been the quickest in the morning session, also dominated the afternoon. Once again, he was the only driver to break the 42-second mark and even improved his fastest lap time set in the morning. At the wheel of his Audi A4 DTM, he lapped the 1.973-kilometre circuit in 41.587 seconds, thus being nearly four tenths of a second faster than in the morning session. His brand-mates, Mattias Ekström and Martin Tomczyk, finished second and third respectively but were more than four tenths of a second slower than the Dane.

Tom Kristensen (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline): “The first day in the new car was just great. The only thing I had to adjust was the seat belt. Once again, the mechanics have done a great job. We have been the quickest today and that also represents thanks to the mechanics. Now, they will be just as motivated for the season as I am…”

Spending a lot of time with the family or pursuing hobbies such as cycling and jet skiing at home in Hobro, Denmark, are unlikely propositions for Tom Kristensen this year. In the 2006 season, the 38-year-old Audi factory driver is shouldering as many as two racing commitments: In the Audi A4 DTM, he contests Europe’s most popular touring car series which is scheduled to start at Hockenheim on April 9th and, in addition, he is part of Audi’s ambitious diesel project in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The differences between these two racing disciplines notwithstanding, there is one thing they have in common: Tom Kristensen is considered one of the hot favourites in both.

As many as seven times Kristensen has won the world’s most famous endurance race in France, now being the record holder. After his victory in the Audi R10 TDI at Sebring (Florida) this weekend, the new diesel sportscar’s debut, the Dane will be flying on Sunday night directly from Miami to London, where the official DTM tests at Brands Hatch are scheduled to start on Monday. There, Kristensen will be taking the wheel of his new Audi A4 DTM - bearing the internal designation “R12 plus” - for the first time.
Yet the record holder has no problem switching from the 650-hp open-air sports prototype to the DTM touring car in which he claimed third place in the Championship last year:
“No matter whether I climb into the R10 TDI or the A4 DTM - I always immediately feel that I’m sitting in an Audi.”

Audi TT driver and enthuisast makes it out of this amazing accident, alive! This was posted on vwvortex. I can say the TT is a great auto but I think there was a bit of “gaurdian angel” in this one. The bus had a camera on board just for these types of inncidents.

NEW YORK — A bus that rear-ended a sports car in a terrible accident on Wednesday had a camera mounted in the windshield and recorded the final moments before the crash.
The accident happened quickly — the bus was cruising on the Long Island Expressway, and the next minute it was at a dead stop, crushing an Audi sports car that was pinned underneath a tractor-trailer.
While the car was mangled into a ball of steel, its driver escaped with just scrapes and bruises.
Nassau police said the truck driver lost control of his truck and crashed into the side of the sports car, which was then rear-ended by a charter bus. Police said the truck’s trailer was overweight by 16,000 pounds. The charter bus was carrying students from the Rocky Point School District.
The owner of the bus company said cameras were installed in all of its buses in 2003, to help with accidents such as this one.
“We were just the wrong person at the wrong time and the drive cam event clearly proved that our driver did nothing to contribute to the accident,” said Bill Schoolman.
Eight adults on the charter bus were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries.
The driver of the truck was issued several tickets.
