2006 Volkswagen New Beetle Review

German Car Blog found a nice review on the 2006 New Beetle. I personally drive a 2000 New Beetle 1.8T GLX. I’ve been a VW loyaltist since my first one, also my first car, a 1971 VW Squareback. I will never forget the buzz surrounding the New Beetle and when the concept hit the NAIAS.

The incessant product buzz at the North American International Auto Show in 1994 centered on the concept car from Volkswagen that redefined the classic Beetle. The overall shape and the dash-mounted bud vase, though, were about the only elements that were like the original. After all, the original was an air-cooled boxer 4-cylinder, rear-engine people’s car, built as simply and dependably as possible to be sold cheaply. The New Beetle was a transverse mounted front-engine, water-cooled, inline-four, nicely trimmed, fully featured and priced well above the bottom feeders. It was a hit at the show and still a hit when it came to market in 1998.

I wanted one since the ‘98 launch and finally got myself in position to get one on 08-17-2002. It’s been a wonderful car to drive. The turbo, although small, is great. I’ve slowly mod’d it over the years and it’s been even more fun. The APH engine is one of the first so it doesn’y have the potential that later engines do but I can deal with it ;)

Well here’s to a good review!

Shell Fuel Economy World Record challenge

On January 17, John and Helen Taylor embark on a trip around the world by car - fuelled by The Shell Fuel Economy Formulation - in an attempt to set a new around-the-world Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency. This attempt is set to cover approximately 28,970 kilometres, across 25 countries, in 70 days…and all on 50 fill-ups or less.

The Taylors are expected to log up to 1,000km each day. To see daily statistics on mileage and fuel consumption along the Taylors’ journey, www.fuelchallenge.com will provide the most up-to-date information, as well as daily blogs by the Taylors and crew, photographs, highlights and tips on fuel efficiency.

John and Helen are holders of thirty-four notable fuel economy-driving achievements but this will be their biggest challenge ever. By the time they return to London in late March, they will have traveled across Europe, Asia, Australia and America. For this challenge, the Taylors approached Shell to be their exclusive fuel provider.

To further demonstrate their commitment to helping people around the world achieve better fuel efficiency, Shell will be road testing their newest Fuel Economy petrol formulation for the challenge, which Shell plans to introduce to the public in the future. The Taylors’ journey will provide Shell researchers with a unique opportunity to assess the performance and effectiveness of its new formulation, and will also enable them to further develop fuel-efficient driving practices appropriate to widely differing road conditions. These learnings will be added to Shell’s “FuelStretch” principles - a set of tips developed to help drivers around the world achieve  fuel economy.

John and Helen will be driving a standard Volkswagen Golf FSI 1.6. For the attempt to qualify as an official Guinness World Record, John and Helen must travel in one direction only. The car needs to be a standard production model. There are eighteen other strict rules and regulations covering antipodal points, East/West co-ordinates, independent adjudication, log books, witnesses, pre-travel engineering checks, and driving times.

Their trip will demonstrate how consumers around the world can be more fuel-efficient - no matter where they live or what vehicle they drive. Shell’s newest petrol/gasoline formulation, the new Fuel Economy Formula, is being designed to help offer improved engine efficiency by improving friction control and increasing engine cleanliness, making it the perfect fuel for this challenge. The new fuel will sit alongside and complement Shell’s premium fuels as another high quality product that differentiates our fuels from the competition.

You’ll be able to track it all as it happens on www.fuelchallenge.com. We’ll upload film, stills and on-the-road statistics and gossip every day. Take a look at it now and register for regular e-mail updates of our top stories as we journey round the world, delivered direct to your in-box.

Audi Q7: Tuned by Abt!

The German Car blog has some new shots via Auto Motor und Sport of ABT’s new Q7. Now we both posted on JE Design’s mod’d Q7, in which we both disliked.

I mentioned how I wasn’t that happy with the Q7’s design in general. I also think it’s a bit late to market with a SUV. Abt does a superb job with the DTM Audi’s but that is another story. The Q7 just seems to beg, “Leave me alone”. I think this holds true to the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, I haven’t seen one with a bodykit, dropped etc that I was pleased with.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
